Tabernacle Shines in 62-36 Win Over Victory Christian

Gardendale, AL – In a high-scoring homecoming matchup on Friday night at the Bill Noble Athletic Complex, the Tabernacle Christian Torches dominated the Victory Christian Eagles (2-3, 1-3) with a final score of 62-36. The Torches’ offense was on fire, led by a pair of underclassmen – juniors Aaron Peters and Kyle Gillis.  

Peters lit up the Eagle defense completing 12-of-14 passes for an eye-popping 298 yards, throwing six touchdown passes. He also ran for 22 yards and added another score on the ground.

Senior Josiah Jones led the Torches rushing attack with 63 yards on 14 carries, senior Justin Blackburn contributed 20 yards on four attempts. Junior Kyle Gillis carried the ball twice for 14 yards, while freshman Landn Ervin and Senior Reed Chase both contributed in the ground game. Chase even managed to score a rushing touchdown despite nursing an injury.

The Torches’ receiving corps were just as impressive in the key CFA conference showdown. Kyle Gillis led the receiving crew with five catches for a massive 135 yards and three touchdowns. Blackburn hauled in a pair of receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore Tucker Andrews caught two for 57 yards and a touchdown. Jones added three catches for 27 yards.

Peters and Gillis also played key roles in converting extra points, with Peters responsible for four and Gillis for two.

The Torches’ defense held their own as well, with seven players making an impact. Junior Alex Tank led with nine tackles, followed by Blackburn with six and Gillis with five. Peters added three stops, while sophomore Ian Anderson and Josiah Jones accounted for two a piece. Sophomore Mason Gurganus chipped in one stop.

The win improves head coach Clint Chase’s Torches to 2-4 on the season, 2-3 in CFA play and keeps their playoff hopes alive. Looking ahead, the Torches travel to Cottondale next Friday night to take on arch rival Tuscaloosa Christian (5-3, 2-2) in a pivotal conference matchup. Victory will take on defending CFA champion Russell Christian (3-3, 3-2) in Meridian, MS.
