8th Ranked Helena Remains Perfect with 49-0 Victory Over Calera

Helena, AL – In a lopsided Friday night Shelby County matchp, the 6th-ranked Helena Huskies cruised to a 49-0 victory over the struggling Calera Eagles. This win brings the Huskies one step closer to their third region championship in program history, as they remain unbeaten at 8-0 (5-0) while Calera languishes at 0-8 (0-6).

The Huskies wasted no time making their mark, with Domynyck Santiago’s 1-yard touchdown early in the contest, setting the tone for the game. Jordan Washington added another touchdown with a 5-yard run, and the first quarter ended with the Huskies leading 14-0.

The second quarter saw more of the same, with Washington scoring his second touchdown. A touchdown pass from Carson Acker to Travis McDaniel extended the Husky lead to 28-0 as time expired on the first half.

After the break, Santiago found the end zone for the second time, making it 35-0. The Huskies’ defense held strong, allowing backup quarterback Nate Ferguson to toss a pair of touchdown passes in the final two quarters, ending the game at 49-0.

Huskies signal caller Carson Acker finished the night with 155 yards through the air, completing 13-of-15 passes and touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Nate Ferguson added two scores while passing for 57 yards and connecting on 5-of-5 throws.  

Washington lead the Husky rushing attack with 66 yards on 13 attempts and a score.  Santiago added two touchdowns, carrying the ball seven times for 52 yards.  

Three Helena receivers; Travis McDaniel, Hudson Pennington and Caleb Haney each recored touchdown receptions.  

Coach Richie Busby’s Huskies now prepare for a crucial road matchup against the Benjamin Russell Wildcats (6-2, 4-1) in a game that will decide the Class 6A, Region 3 championship.  

The Eagles will look to secure their first victory with a trip to Etowah County to face the Gadsden City Titans (6-3, 5-0) in a non-region contest.
