Scottsboro knocks off Decatur 35-20

Scottsboro, AL – The Scottsboro Wildcats (8-2, 4-1) finished the regular season on a high note with a 35-20 victory over the Decatur Red Raiders Friday night at Pat Trammell Stadium. This win secured the No. 2 seed in 5A, Region 7 for head coach Cris Bell’s Wildcats, while Decatur’s season came to a close with a 3-7 overall record and a 1-4 mark in Class 6A, Region 7 play.

The Wildcats showcased their strength in the running game, with standout performances from Jackobi Edmonson, Keelan Alvarez, and Jake Jones. Edmonson contributed 91 yards and two touchdowns, Alvarez added 89 yards and a touchdown, and Jones rushed for an impressive 99 yards.

Scottsboro wasted no time in taking control of the game, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was a remarkable 64-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Jayden Gilbert, followed by a two-yard run from Alvarez. The Wildcats extended their lead to 21-0 in the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run by Antonio Brooks.

Decatur managed to get on the scoreboard with Bradin Dupper’s seven-yard pass to Wyatt Smith, cutting Scottsboro’s lead to 21-7. However, the Wildcats swiftly responded with a seven-yard touchdown run by Edmonson, bringing the score to 27-7. Just before halftime, Decatur showed resilience with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dupper to Rhys Dorsey, reducing the deficit to 27-14.

The second half belonged to Scottsboro as they maintained control of the game. Edmonson’s 40-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter extended their lead to 35-14. Although Dupper managed to score a four-yard touchdown run for Decatur as time expired, the Wildcats’ lead proved insurmountable.

Looking ahead, Scottsboro is set to host the Moody Blue Devils (8-2, 5-1) in the first round of the AHSAA Class 5A postseason next week. This game against Decatur showcased the balanced performance of the Wildcats, with notable contributions from Jackobi Edmonson, Keelan Alvarez, and Jake Jones. The team’s ability to establish an early lead and maintain control throughout the game allowed them to secure their playoff spot.

As the playoffs approach, Scottsboro will carry the momentum from this game and look to make their mark on the postseason.
