Mountain Brook Pins Make the Difference in 29-28 Win Over Homewood in AHSAA 6A Duals Quarterfinals

Defending 6A Dual Champs Mountain Brook Advances to Final 4

On Saturday, Jude Smith, a junior from Mountain Brook High School, achieved a pivotal victory over Homewood’s Lantham Boyd. His winning move, a pin, resulted in a nail-biting 29-28 victory for the Spartans against Homewood in the AHSAA Duals Tournament’s Class 6A quarterfinal, held at McAdory High School. The Spartans, last year’s Class 6A state duals champions, came off victories against Pelham (64-7) and Homewood (36-28) to establish this quarterfinal face-off with the Patriots.

The Spartans initiated the final match with a 23-9 lead, winning five out of the first eight matches. However, Homewood wasn’t going down without a fight, winning the next four matches and closing the gap to a mere one point. With only two matches remaining, Smith turned the tide with a momentous pin at 2:32 in the 159-pound weight category, extending Mountain Brook’s lead to 29-22. Despite obtaining a forfeit and six points in the 167-pound weight class match, Homewood fell short by a single point.

Interestingly, the Patriots won over half of the 14 matches. However, Mountain Brook’s triumph was cemented by three wins via pins, including Smith’s. Sam Carroll and Stephen Springfield also contributed with their victories in the 192-pound and 122-pound categories, respectively.

Looking ahead, Mountain Brook will compete in the AHSAA State Duals Tournament semifinals this Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex Bill Harris Arena, where they will face Pike Road at 8:45 a.m. Concurrently, Athens and Mortimer Jordan will compete in the other Class 6A semifinal.

For the first time in the seven-year history of the AHSAA Duals State Tournament, a “Final 4” format will be introduced, with both semifinals and finals taking place at Bill Harris Arena. This development sees the return of last year’s duals champions (Huntsville in Class 7A, Mountain Brook in 6A, and Jasper in 5A) and 2023’s runner-up teams (Smith Station in 7A, Mortimer Jordan in 6A, Tallassee in 5A, and Ranburne in Class 1A/4A) advancing to the semifinals.

The remaining quarterfinal matches of the 2024 Duals tournament were wrapped up this Saturday, and all semifinal fixtures are now set. The semifinal and final matches of the 2024 Duals Tournament will be live-streamed on the NFHS Network, thanks to production by Track Wrestling.

Simultaneously, the AHSAA Girls’ Invitational State Tournament will kick off this week at Thompson High School and will move to the Bill Harris Arena on Friday for their weight division championship matches. These matches will also be live-streamed on the NFHS Network.
