Stanhope Elmore & Marbury Girls, Spain Park & Gulf Shores Boys Claim South Regional Bowling Titles

Vestavia Hills, AL – In the AHSAA South Regional Bowling Championships’ Class 6A/7A girls’ division, Stanhope Elmore emerged victorious, sweeping all three matches in the eight-team bracket with a flawless 4-0 win on Friday.

Marbury clinched the girls’ 1A/5A division title, while the boys’ competition saw Gulf Shores seize the 1A/5A South title and Spain Park outdo Stanhope Elmore to claim the 6A/7A South crown.

The first round of the boys’ 6A/7A bracket at Vestavia Hills’ Vestavia Bowl saw Spain Park overcome Spanish Fort 4-0. They then proceeded to defeat top seed Thompson 4-1 in the semifinals in an exhausting first game of the Baker format, scoring 243-205. The Jaguars amassed 1,031 pins against Thompson’s 946. The championship match was a memorable one, with Spain Park edging past Stanhope Elmore 4-3 by securing the final game of the best-of-7 Baker match 210-158. The Jags accumulated 1,295 pins while Stanhope managed 1,138.

Stanhope Elmore fought their way to the finals with a nail-biting 4-3 victory over Auburn in the first round, clinching the seventh game with a score of 190-150. The Mustangs stacked up 1,195 pins against Auburn’s 1,022. Stanhope also defeated Dothan 4-1 in the semifinals. Despite losing the pin count 1,247 to 1,223, the Wolves triumphed 4-3 in their first-round match against Alma Bryant.

In other matches, Gulf Shores defeated Marbury 4-1 in the first round, Holt 4-2 in the semifinals, and local rival Elberta 4-2 in the finals. The Dolphins won the pin count 1,004 to 887.

In the South girls’ competition, Marbury triumphed over Citronelle 4-0, Orange Beach 4-0, and Sipsey Valley 4-2 in the 1A/5A finals. The championship match was a hard-fought victory, with a final pin count of 981 to 959 favoring the Bulldogs.

Stanhope Elmore’s girls had a relatively smoother run to the 6A/7A finals, not losing a single game. The Mustangs outscored their opponents by 116, 187, and finally 198 pins in their three victories.

The North Regional Bowling tournament, taking place at Spare Time Bowling Center in Trussville, will conclude its traditional round next Wednesday and hold its Baker Format championship play on Thursday.

The semifinalists will advance to the AHSAA State Bowling Championships, set to be held at Mobile’s Bolero Bowling Center from February 1-2.
