Vigor Knocks Off Guntersville 75-70 in Hard Fought Class 5A Semifinal Clash

Birmingham, AL – In the nightcap of day three of the 2024 AHSAA State Basketball Finals, Vigor senior forward Terrell Johnson led the Wolves with an impressive 33 points to secure a 75-70 Class 5A semifinal victory over the Guntersville Wildcats.

Johnson shined, sinking 12-of-20 shots and draining 3-of-6 from three-point land in addition to grabbing eight rebounds. This victory propels Vigor (28-6) into the Class 5A state championship game against the Fairfield Tigers, slated for Saturday morning at 10:45 a.m. in the BJCC’s Legacy Arena.

Coach Jarius Jackson of Vigor praised his team’s dedication and hard work throughout the season. Despite facing foul trouble in the second half, Johnson’s standout performance was pivotal in the Wolves’ success.

“We prepared to be down in the trenches.  We knew the state tournament was going to be a battle.  It’s going to be a boxing match. Back and forth, but we prepared for it and once again, we depended on our defense.” Jackson said following the Wolves victory.

Head coach Brett Self’s Wildcats (20-11)showed resilience throughout the contest with guard Jackson Porch contributing 26 points, including six from beyond the arc, and adding four steals. Guntersville managed to keep the game competitive, narrowing the gap to just one point late in the fourth period at 63-62. However, Vigor’s ability to convert at the charity stripe and execute key steals in the final moments helped them maintain their lead and punch their ticket to the title game.

Vigor also saw valuable contributions from Aslan Jones and Albert Holcomb, who scored 11 and 9 points, respectively. On the Guntersville side, Treyvon Avery and C.J. Scott made notable efforts, with Avery finishing the game with 12 points, three assists, and three steals, while Scott added 11 points.
