Thompson vs. IMG Academy Game Cancelled Due to Hurricane Idalia

Alabaster, AL – The highly anticipated matchup between the defending Class 7A state champion Thompson Warriors and national powerhouse IMG Academy has been canceled. The decision comes as Hurricane Idalia threatens to impact the travel plans of the Florida based program.

Hurricane Idalia is projected to make landfall along Florida’s Big Bend region on Wednesday morning, prompting concerns about travel safety for the Ascenders. With IMG Academy situated in Bradenton, Florida, the potential disruption to travel routes has prompted the joint decision by both Thompson and IMG Academy to put the breaks on the contest.

The impending limitations on travel in and out of the Tampa area in the upcoming days have further underscored the necessity of the cancellation.

In an email statement, Thompson Athletic Director, Vincent Pitts, acknowledged the unfortunate situation. He stated that due to the tightly packed schedules of both teams, the possibility of rescheduling the game this year is unlikely.

Thompson, the reigning four-time Class 7A state champions, kicked off their season on a positive note with a victory over Opelika in the AHSAA Kickoff Classic in Montgomery. Their focus now shifts to the upcoming Class 7A, Region 3 opener against rival Vestavia Hills on September 8.

On the other side, IMG Academy boasts an impressive record of 2-0, having secured wins against Nashville’s Lipscomb Academy and St. Joseph’s Prep (PA).  Scheduled to face Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis on September 8, the team will be looking to maintain its undefeated streak despite the setback caused by Hurricane Idalia.
