Cold Springs Senior Ethan Edgeworth Sprints to Record-Setting Time at Scottsboro

Reigning Class 7A girls’ champ shines in first outing of 2023

By Josh Bean | For the AHSAA

MONTGOMERY, AL – Cold Springs High School senior Ethan Edgeworth did something he’s never done before: He broke 15 minutes in the 5K high school cross country distance.

That puts Edgeworth, a University of Tennessee commitment, in this week’s AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight along with Auburn High School’s Sarah Tole.

Edgeworth clocked a personal-best 14:45.24 to win the Scottsboro Invitational at John R. Esslinger Trail of Champions. He won the race by nearly a minute over Signal Mountain (TN) runner Joshua Pote. It’s the fastest time of the season so far by nearly 45 seconds.

Edgeworth’s time is also better than the state-meet record 14:46.63 turned in by Auburn Maxwell Hardin to cap the 2022 season. Edgeworth is the reigning Class 1A-2A cross country individual champion. He also won individual state titles in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs last spring after winning 1,600- and 3,200-meter titles during the 2023 indoor track championships.

Tole, the reigning Class 7A individual girls’ champ, ran 18:22.10 to finish third at the AT&T Starr’s Mill Panther Meet in Fayetteville, Ga., last weekend. Her time is just 20 seconds off her personal-best set at last year’s state meet.

Tole’s time of 18:22.10 is more than 30 seconds faster than any other time reported so far this season by a female Alabama runner.
