Sylviana’s Tyler Vann Takes Over Scottsboro Football Program

Scottsboro, AL – The Scottsboro Wildcats have found their next leader on the gridiron.  Sylviana’s Tyler Vann has officially been named the Cats’ 38th head football coach.

Vann takes over for former head coach Cris Bell who stepped down on January 4 after three seasons at the helm of the Scottsboro program.

Over four seasons as a head coach, Vann boasts a solid 33-16 record. His head coaching journey began with a one year stint at Class 1A Woodville in 2020, where he led the Panthers to a 5-6 record, including a playoff appearance. This achievement was significant as the five victories matched Woodville’s program record at that time.

Vann made the move to Class 3A Sylvania in 2021, where he recorded a 28-10 record, including a region championship and three playoff appearances. His tenure at Sylvania was highlighted by a Class 3A state semifinal appearance in 2022 and a 3A quarterfinal appearance the following season. Vann’s Sylvania squads consistently performed well, with records of 8-3, 10-4, and 10-3 during his three seasons, and an average of over 30 points per game. His final Sylvania team clinched the 2023 Class 3A Region 6 championship.

During his high school years, Vann starred on the gridiron for Adam Gilbert’s North Sand Mountain Bison.  As the Bison’s starting quarterback for three seasons (2009-2012), Vann passed for 5,616 yards and 54 touchdowns, and rushed for over 1,000 yards. He led the Bison to their first-ever back-to-back playoff appearances in 2011 and 2012, with a 21-11 record as a starter, earning an all-state honorable mention as a senior.

Following his playing career, Vann transitioned to the sidelines and served as an assistant coach at several North Alabama programs, including North Sand Mountain, Arab, Scottsboro, and Buckhorn before accepting his first head coaching position at Woodville.

He enters his first season at Scottsboro with a 33-16 record overall, including four postseason berths and a region crown over four seasons as a head coach.

Vann is set to take charge of a Scottsboro team that had a successful 8-3 run and a playoff appearance in 2023.  Following AHSAA reclassification, the Wildcats will join Arab, Boaz, Brewer, Douglas, Guntersville and Sardis in Class 6A, Region 8.

Scottsboro is set to kick off their 2024 campaign August 23 at Pat Trammell Stadium against the 6A Fort Payne Wildcats.
