Alford Shines Bright in Central-Phenix City’s Season Opening Victory over Hewitt-Trussville

The Friday night lights illuminated a spectacular start to the 2023 prep football season as 4th ranked Central-Phenix City junior quarterback, Andrew Alford, stole the spotlight with a monumental performance in his first start.

Alford’s aerial prowess was on full display as he orchestrated a thrilling 48-24 road victory over the 5th ranked Hewitt-Trussville Huskies, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Completing an astounding 22-of-28 passes for an eye-popping 428 yards and five touchdowns, Alford’s command of the game was nothing short of exceptional.

The junior signal-caller exhibited his composure and mastery, connecting on 17 consecutive passes at one juncture, leaving defenders and spectators alike in awe of his poise under pressure. Alford’s precision wasn’t the sole spectacle of the night; his chemistry with teammate Cameron Coleman proved to be a dynamic force that Hewitt-Trussville struggled to contain.

Coleman, a talent to be reckoned with, snagged an impressive nine receptions for a total of 145 yards and played a pivotal role in securing late-game touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came in the electrifying fourth quarter, with Alford threading the needle to find Coleman twice in the end zone. 

Dylan Gentry joined the receiving showcase, proving himself to be a force to be reckoned with alongside Alford. Gentry hauled in six passes for an astonishing 179 yards and found the end zone twice, underscoring the Red Devils’ offensive prowess under the guidance of head coach Patrick Nix.

Alford’s journey to this standout performance wasn’t without its chapters of change. Transferring to Central-Phenix City High School during the offseason from the Brooksone School in Columbus, GA, Alford seamlessly integrated into the Red Devils’ system, showcasing not only his athletic prowess but also his adaptability and dedication to his craft.

This remarkable exhibition of skill and teamwork didn’t go unnoticed. Alford’s stellar performance earned him the prestigious AHSAA Spotlight for week 0 of the Alabama high school football season. As the accolades pour in, Alford remains humbled by the recognition and credits his teammates, coaches, and unwavering determination for his standout performance.
