Reclassification Breakdown: Check Out The Full AHSAA Class and Region Lineup For 2024

Montgomery, AL – The Central Board of the Alabama High School Athletic Association gave their approval for the reclassification of fall sports for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, triggering significant changes in Alabama high school football. The reclassification process, which occurs biennially, is based on student enrollment numbers. The figures for the first 20 school days after Labor Day provided by public schools to the Alabama State Board of Education and submitted by private schools to the AHSAA serve as the basis for this process. Private schools are also classified with a 1.35 multiplier and a competitive balance factor, which could push successful teams to a higher classification.

AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs expressed his gratitude to the Central Board and AHSAA staff for their dedication, acknowledging the difficulty of the task at hand. He announced, “Over 190,000 student-athletes are predicted to engage in AHSAA sports activities over the upcoming reclassification period. I want to thank the Central Board and AHSAA staff for their dedicated efforts,” Briggs said. “As always, it was a difficult job, but everyone worked together to find the best solution as we move forward.”

The new alignment for the 2024 and 2025 football seasons includes 32 teams in Class 7A, 58 in Class 6A, 59 in Class 5A, 65 in Class 4A, 61 in Class 3A, 57 in Class 2A, and 61 in Class 1A. This reclassification will include new entrants to Class 7A, such as Carver-Montgomery, Robertsdale, and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Meanwhile, Spain Park, Percy Julian, and Chelsea will now be part of Class 6A.

Notably, Bayshore Christian will make its varsity football debut in 2024 as a Class 2A program. Additionally, four previous Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) schools will join the AHSAA next fall, with Glenwood and Lee-Scott opening as Class 3A schools, and Autauga Academy and Pickens Academy will be competing in Class 1A.

The reclassification will also see four 2023 state champions moving up in class: Gulf Shores (from 5A to 6A), Montgomery Catholic (from 4A to 5A), Fyffe (from 2A to 3A), and Mobile Christian (from 3A to 4A). However, Central-Phenix City, Clay-Chalkville, and Leroy will remain in their existing classifications.

In a remarkable leap, Hatton will ascend two classes, moving from Class 2A to Class 4A, Region 7. Notably, private school football teams moving up under the Competitive Balance Factor include Coosa Christian, Madison Academy, Mobile Christian, St. James, and Montgomery Catholic.

Hoover maintains its status as the state’s largest school with a daily enrollment average of 2,222. Auburn, Sparkman, Baker, and Central-Phenix City follow closely. Florence is the smallest school in the elite 32 of Class 7A, with an enrollment number of 1,094.

Reclassification, according to the AHSAA Constitution and By-Laws, is conducted every two years by the AHSAA Central Board of Control.

Central Bord of Control president Mike WelshSuperintend of Cherokee County Schools, added, “This new classification and fall sport recommendations came after many hours of study and discussion. Everyone involved gave of their valuable time to evaluate our classification system thoroughly and provided input in ways to improve that system. On behalf of the Central Board of Control and our member schools, I want to thank AHSAA staff for their hard work. I also want to thank our Central Board for their commitment to making decisions that are best for all of our member schools.”

Alignments for winter and spring sports will be determined following the completion of their championship seasons.

UPDATE: Due to an error in the holdback/promotion portion of the ADM data reported from the Alabama State Department of Education, the AHSAA has made adjustments to the originally announced classifications. Upon recalculating the data and confirming the error, the AHSAA proceeded to amend the classification of four schools: Brooks, Anniston, J.B. Pennington, and Winfield. The new assignments place Brooks and Anniston, originally in Class 5A, into Class 4A. J.B. Pennington and Winfield, initially classified in Class 4A, have been moved to Class 3A. The reclassification of those programs resulted in sugnificant changes in the makeup of several regions in Classes 3A, 4A and 5A.  All class and region alignments have been updated. .
